Seller Update - Relist your listings every 60 days

March 1, 2023 9:58am by dan

Summary of Change

Later this week we will start sending out email notifications to Sellers with listings that are over 60 days old and have not sold. The Seller will need to click on the link in the email to renew the listing for another 60 days. If more than one listing is expiring, then each individual listing will need to be renewed. A reminder email will be sent out the day before removal and a notice if the listing is removed due to no response from the seller. A listing can always be re-listed from the seller's account even after it's been removed.

Action Required by Seller

If you get an email notice, click on the link which will take you to your account where you can renew each listing.

Reason for the change

We've had to refund buyers recently due to sellers no longer having the item available to ship. This is not a good buyer experience. Some of these buyers will not come back because of this, which hurts all sellers. Sellers forget to update listings sometimes. We get it. We are hopeful that this re-listing reminder will help.

Travel Bike Frames on BikeList!

February 21, 2023 6:22pm by rob
It’s fun to travel and it’s even more fun to travel with your bike! To make it easier and cheaper to bring your bike on the plane, several companies have come up with designs that will allow you to pack a full size bike into a smaller, more portable case. The two leading designs on the market are the S&S Couplers and the Ritchey Breakaway. I’ve owned each (still own a Breakaway) and have no strong preference between the two. And now we have two great examples on the site right now--and both are great all-round bikes! One is a Ritchey Outback Breakaway and one is a Surly Cross Check with S&S couplers.

Have you owned either design? What did you think?

InsideRide E-Flex Plus

February 15, 2023 10:05am by rob
Larry from InsideRide invented this cool new platform to make days on the trainer more natural, more comfortable and more fun. I got to try it at the Cascade Bike Swap in Seattle and loved it. I was leaning toward getting the Sarris platform but now I think I want this instead. Seems much more dynamic. Plus it’s got a smaller form factor and the bike remains at a natural height relative to the ground. Currently the E-Flex Plus is only compatible with the Wahoo Kickr and Core, but I plan to talk to Larry more about how to get it integrated with the Zwift Hub. Made in Portland! Watch Larry demo it below!

Used Bike Clothing?

February 9, 2023 12:33pm by rob
Do you buy used bike clothing? We all know that good bike stuff tends to be expensive. And sometimes you can find great stuff used in great shape at a very good price.

I’m pretty old school and dorky when it comes to clothing (and I still mostly wear lycra). And when I find stuff I like, I tend to stick with it. My favorites are Pearl Izumi tights, vests and jackets, Voler jerseys (both long and short sleeve), SockGuy or Smartwool socks and Louis Garneau shorts.

I tend to wear stuff til it basically rots off me. But sometimes I get gifts which don’t fit or aren’t my style so I list them for sale (like this rad PDM jersey).

Clothing is a big business and an extremely wasteful business. Patagonia has been very transparent about the environmental and labor issues around clothing. And in the bike world, Kitsbow has done the same. All their stuff is top notch and made in the USA.

Patagonia launched a used clothing store in 2017 and now Kitsbow has done the same, powered by the folks at Treet. I love the idea.

My Five Favorite Bike Tools

February 8, 2023 2:48pm by rob
High quality tools can last a lifetime. I’ve had several of these tools for decades. They may be getting somewhat out of date, but so are most of my bikes!

Var dishing tool

I doubt this beautiful blue French dishing tool is still made. Back when I bought it, it was considered better than the Campy because it worked for road wheels AND 26 inch mtb wheels!

Felco cable cutters

Still the best ones on the market as far as I’m concerned. Change my mind.

Hozan 4th hand tool

These used to be the standard in shops. We used to call them “green grabbers.” I don’t think they are green anymore and the Park equivalent may be more popular, but these are great. Probably not used as much on bikes since most people are riding disc brakes these days.

Campagnolo derailleur alignment tool

This tool is beautifully simple. Newer versions from Park and Abbey are more high tech and have gauges, but the old Campy one has always done the job just fine for me.

Park Deluxe repair stand

Not sure if a stand qualifies as a tool but I love this thing. Had it for over 30 years. When I ordered it I was still working in shops and my manager was worried I was getting ready to quit! Awesome clamp design and a 65 pound base plate! Park has made some minor changes over the years, but the basic design has remained the same.

Seller of the Week: Chase Smith from The Bicycle Station

February 6, 2023 4:20pm by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is Chase Smith from The Bicycle Station in Columbus, Indiana. She recently listed several bikes and parts with us, including this 2023 Trek Superfly and this 2019 Specialized Diverge!

How did you get into bikes?

My dad and brothers all rode and tried for years to get me into cycling but I was stubborn and stuck with running. I finally ended up joining Teter Cycling, a Little 500 team at IU which got me into road. From there I started venturing into gravel and mountain bike! I just enjoy it all this point.

What bike do you ride the most?

I probably end up on my gravel bike the most. Our area has an endless amount of gravel roads that are easy to hop on regardless of the season. Right now I’m riding a Trek Checkpoint.

What is your favorite bike ride?

I don’t even know how to pick a favorite ride! My husband is super into Wandrer Earth and is always making us new routes. So any ride adventuring to a new-to-us area is probably my favorite.

Campy or Shimano?

Probably SRAM! I don’t even think I’ve had anything but SRAM for the last few year.

Any big plans for the next year?

This year I’m focusing on just getting back into riding after having my baby. I’m going to do a few races, but I’m mostly playing it by ear. I’m putting on a 60 mile gravel race in May and maybe another in the fall, so I’m probably going to take a small step back from racing to work on those and learn how to juggle riding and having a baby!

Five E-bikes I Want to Check Out

February 3, 2023 9:42am by rob
I don’t own an e-bike and I’m not really in the market for one, but I do watch them closely and I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before I get one. My wife got a Specialized Turbo Vado last year and loves it. Here are five that interest me the most right now.

Surly Skid Loader

I have always loved Surly. I commuted on a Surly Cross Check for ten years (and then I donated it to BikeWorks). They are built like tanks and are endlessly adaptable to a wide variety of builds. I love the thought that went into their new Skid Loader, plus with those beefy 27.5 wheels and tires it just looks like fun. And saying "Skid Loader" makes me crack up.

Brompton Electric

Brompton’s are just plain funky cool as urban bikes that fold easily for public transport or carrying inside and up stairs. So how about an e-bike version? Sounds natural. And it’s just 36 pounds.

Transition Relay

Transition is the hometown favorite here in Bellingham. I saw their new Relay e-bike posted on their Instagram this week and wow--that's a good looking bike! Here’s a cool feature: remove the battery and ride without power (and the weight) if you want! That seems to make a lot of sense.

Specialized Globe

Specialized has Rad Power Bikes in their crosshairs with their new Globe. But where is it Specialized? I walked into the local dealer and asked and they still don’t have a delivery timeline.

Urban Arrow

If you want to talk real car substitute, the Urban Arrow seems to be the top dog. Not cheap at $7k+ but from what I have read it sounds like you get what you pay for!

Have you ridden any of these? Do you own one? Let us know your thoughts! What e-bikes interest you the most?
