Seller of the Week: Sal from Great American Bicycles

November 3, 2022 9:45am by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!
Sal from Great American Bicycles is an experienced bike collector and restorer living in Thousand Oaks, California. He specializes in 90s mountain bikes and has listed some awesome Klein and Gary Fisher bikes on our site!

How did you get into bikes?
I have been collecting bikes for over 30 years and am now specializing in vintage American mountain bikes from the 90s. Why? Three reasons. The style, technology and unique paint customization of that era were groundbreaking then and still are to this day.

What bike do you ride the most?
My go to ride is a 1995 Klein Pulse II in ebony Black. This was the lightest mountain bike ever made by Klein–an “ an out of the box racer” as described in Klein catalog.

What is your favorite bike ride?
I love to take the mighty Klein up to Chesebro Road in Agoura Hills. It’s not far from where MTB Legend John Parker started Yeti Cycles.

Campy or Shimano?
Shimano! M-900 1990 era XTR is bullet proof.

Any big plans for the next year?
I acquired a Cannondale Cujo Neo with Bosh motor E Bike pedal assist. I will be riding the red beast more next year as it opens more trail opportunities with the pedal assist.

Philly Bike Expo Recap

November 1, 2022 11:38am by rob

We had an awesome time at the Philly Bike Expo! We were slammed! I wanted to walk around and see more folks but it was hard to get out of the booth! Next year we will be there with more folks.

We did get to know our neighbors, and we had some awesome ones. Like Kurt Boone from Messenger841 on my left and the great folks from Planet Ert on my right. We were directly across from Tim at Digit Bikes with his cool new analog suspension frames, and the guys from Big Bobble Hats, who had flown in from the UK. And I also got to spend some time with the Time folks and Boyd and Nicole Johnson from Boyd Cycling.

I had a lot of fun answering questions about BikeList. Here are some of the most common questions. These are mostly all handled in our FAQ, but I’ll give my short answers below.

What do you do about stolen bikes?

As a first step we have integrated with Project 529. Stay tuned for more!

Slow Guy on the Fast Ride Podcast

October 31, 2022 12:23pm by rob

Dan Cavallari from Slow Guy on the Fast Ride recently invited me on his podcast. We had a great time talking about what it’s like to start a new business in the bike industry. You can read Dan’s blog and listen to the podcast here.

But be sure to subscribe to the Slow Guy on the Fast Ride wherever you listen to podcasts (I prefer Spotify). Like BikeList, Dan’s podcast is relatively new, but it’s awesome!

How to Photograph Your Bike and Parts to Sell Online

October 27, 2022 9:51am by rob
We had fun with this one. The goal was to show what to do–along with what NOT to do–and to keep it short and fun.

The biggest issues we see with listing photos on BikeList and elsewhere are distracting backgrounds, poor lighting and bad crops. It’s not rocket science! And keep in mind that when taking photos to sell your stuff is a bit different than pure beauty shots–you want to be thorough and show the good with the bad.

For anyone curious about the red and blue Eddy Merckx bike in the video: it’s one of bikes ridden by Thomas Bay, a professional rider from Denmark who rode with Motorola in 1993–along with Andy Hampsten, Sean Yates, Steve Bauer, Lance Armstrong and Phil Anderson–what a team! This is something of a holy grail bike for me and it’s definitely not for sale!

Seller of the Week: Kristina Ehlers

October 25, 2022 9:42am by rob

Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

Kristina Ehlers (AKA kzombified on BikeList) is a bike mechanic living in Des Moines, Iowa. We love her cool custom bicycle component clocks (I already bought one for my office). And this Liv Beliv low step road bike is super cool, too!

How did you get into bikes? I started commuting to work by bike about a decade ago to save money. It slowly turned into working on my own bikes, friends' bikes, getting a job at a bike shop, and eventually getting a full time gig there. My interest only grew from there, getting into mountain biking, cyclocross, and finding out what fixed gears are all about. I even tried out a 100k gravel race, and survived. I now ride more days than not, for business and pleasure around town. Each biking style has their own perks and qualities, I love a bit of all of it.

Are You Ready For the Dark Days of Winter?

October 24, 2022 12:46pm by rob

It's that time of year--time to break out the bike lights and test your batteries. I like having these cheapo Planet Bike Spok blinkies at a minimum (usually combined with a higher wattage Light and Motion headlight--more on those later). I especially like the way the rear  Spok light fits on my POC helmet.

Are you ready for winter?

Oh, and be sure to follow us on TikTok!

@bikelist You ready for some night riding? Makecsure you can see AND becseen! We recommend bigger lights but these blinkies are acgreat start! #nightrider #bike #bikelife #bikelight #bikelist #bikecommute #bikeride ♬ Knight Rider (Main Theme) - TV Sounds Unlimited
