A great example of how to photograph a bike to sell online

September 4, 2022 1:30pm by dan

A while back we shared some tips for listing a bike for sale online but neglected to include some examples. Well, here is one that just listed today. This OPEN Cycles U.P.(P.E.R.) medium is available on BikeList for a great price and can be found here.

The first photo for the listing shows the entire bike.

Rad BMX Builds

September 2, 2022 8:22am by rob

Sean Nichols has built up an awesome following on Instagram with his Rad BMX Builds and he is starting to get a lot more serious about YouTube. Sean had a passion for BMX as a kid in the 80s and has returned to it after 27 years in the United States Air Force.

I reached out to Sean a few weeks ago and we hatched a plan for this one-of-a-kind SE Bikes OM Flyer, which Sean just listed for sale on BikeList! You can learn more about the build below. And stay tuned for more from BikeList and Rad BMX Builds!

Update: bike sold almost immediately. But definitely stay tuned for more!

Check out the behind the scenes shots below, then watch our Sell video and our Buy video and let us know what you think! And be sure to subscribe to the BikeList YouTube channel while you are at it! There is a lot more when these came from!

Five Changes Over Fifty

August 22, 2022 10:51pm by rob

I turned 54 last month. That means I’ve been riding bikes bigger than BMX bikes for 40 years now. Crazy! Well, here’s my list of five things you will start to notice over age 50 (or anyway, these are things I have noticed).

You’re not as fast This is a hard one to face. I think I finally started noticing it in my mid-40s (though it probably started a lot sooner than that). Hills start to seem harder. The big ring doesn’t get used as much. Just compare your Strava times to folks younger than you. Reality bites.

My first bike was a BMX purchased at an auto parts store

Growing up in the 80s was pretty cool. Pac-man, Members Only Jackets, and BMX bikes. Those were the days! I don't remember every Christmas from my childhood, but I definitely remember the one where I got my first bike. After all the presents had been opened my dad said he thought he saw something Santa had left in the TV room (yes, we had a room dedicated to the family's TV. It was a big deal back then). There, hiding underneath a white sheet, was a fully assembled Shuck's SX200 BMX bike in black and gold.

Ebike Cargo Bikes: Longtails are like Minivans and Front Loaders are like Pickup Trucks

August 6, 2022 11:54am by rob

I’ve decided I finally want an ebike. My wife got one last year (a Specialized Turbo Vado) and she loves it. We can finally ride together and she makes fun of me when we go up hills.

I’m fascinated with cargo bikes. I actually thought of starting a cargo bike company twenty years ago but realized that they really wouldn’t make sense for most people. Ebikes have changed that.

My good buddy James got a Tern ebike cargo bike two years ago and loves it. It’s become his grocery getter (see pic).

My primary purpose for this bike will be short errands. Yes, we have cars. But our main car is often with my wife. So then I’m left with the choice of a 1960s era pickup or a small cramped sports car. A cargo bike would be way better.

Tips for Selling a Bike Online

August 5, 2022 11:04am by dan

The Wall Street Journal reports that Millennials and Gen Z are driving the current boom in secondhand goods online. Web 1.0 survivors Craigslist and eBay are doing well as well as the slightly newer folks like OfferUp and Etsy. The article drops some science on its readers with some more recent experiments conducted in online auction marketplaces - some with surprising results.
Basically, the article points best practices of removing any personalization from a listing (i.e. knock off the "I'm really sad to part with this item..." stories), experimentation when setting the Buy It Now price for auctions, choosing a good auction end time, and strategic use of uncertainty in listing titles and description. All pretty good advice (you can read the full article here), but what about bikes? Two of the big tips for bikes are to clean up the bike and to take great photos. Here's an excellent video from Seth's Bike Hacks showing a little experiment flipping a bike for a profit.

Wear a Helmet. Or Don't.

August 2, 2022 11:51am by rob

It seems like half of Bike Twitter these days is made up of cyclists who don’t wear helmets being upset when people (other cyclists, drivers, their mom) tell them to wear a helmet. Many of these non-helmet wearing folks claim that helmets don’t offer much protection and then offer statistics about cycling fatalities to back them up. Additionally, many of these same folks seem to claim that low speed falls aren’t particularly dangerous, and that therefore a simple commute or trip to the grocery store doesn’t warrant wearing a helmet. And apparently no one wears helmets in Amsterdam and they are all happy and healthy!

How to Pack a Bike Frame

July 29, 2022 11:29am by rob

Want to see how to pack a bike frame to ship? Our awesome seller the_mtb_recyclist shows how it’s done with this 1995 Trek 930 frameset.
