How did you get into bikes?

I started cycling when I moved to Los Angeles because I was broke. Everyone said I needed a car but it turns out the cycling infrastructure included buses that had bike racks attached and a subway and light rail system that let you put your bikes onboard. So I pretty much spent no time in cars. Perfect weather, wide open spaces, passing cars stuck in gridlock, it felt like freedom. But I really started nerding out about bike history and design after moving to NYC 13 years ago. The cycling community here is big, strong, and diverse. It's great.

What bike do you ride the most?

My bike Enola, photo attached, is my all season commuter. I bought it from a guy who was living out of his car 11 years ago. It was originally an 80's touring bike, but 2 years ago I converted it into the ultimate rat bike: intentionally rusted 40 year old Japanese frameset, fat tires, silver chrome components, skinny road bike saddle, flat bar, and a 3 speed coaster brake wheelset. Cyclists appreciate it, thieves think it's garbage. It's perfect. Sometimes I actually take it to other cities instead of my modern bike, an All-City Space Horse.

What is your favorite bike ride?

Crown Heights, Brooklyn, to Jacob Riis Beach. Going from the city to the sea.

Campy or Shimano?

Shimano. Campy is expensive, beautiful, and wholly unnecessary for my riding style.

Any big plans for the next year?

Planning a 12 hour ride to the tip of Long Island, NY, and a 9 hour ride to Philly. And I'm really excited to convert a 90's mtb into a touring bike. The frameset is a Giant Sedona ATX with the poison dart frog paint job that shimmers in the sun.

Seller Spotlight: David Johnson

July 18, 2023 10:27am by rob
This week's Seller Spotlight is on David Johnson! He currently has several incredible vintage bikes from his collection for sale on BikeList, including this 1955 Rotrax and this 1960s T.J. Quick!

Now for our five easy questions!

How did you get into bikes?
I have been riding bikes since I was a kid. I am now 72. I started more serious riding in the 1970's on a 10 speed Raleigh Grand Prix then moved up to a custom Raleigh USA racing bike with full Campagnolo. Twelve years ago I opened a bike shop as a side business to serve people on Iowa's High Trestle Trail. I rented and repaired bikes and built up an extensive collection of English, Italian, French and American bikes. I sold my bike building and downsized to repairs only. With a smaller space I ended up selling most of my collection. I have about a half a dozen classics left, but I am keeping a 1947 copper plated Wilier with Campy Corsa shifting and a mint condition 1974 Raleigh International with full Campy.

What bike do you ride the most?
I ride an ICE trike on the trail almost exclusively. My aging body likes the recumbent position plus I just enjoy the trike viewpoint.

What is your favorite bike ride?
I have ridden many segments of RAGBRAI over the last 40 years. My favorite ride of all time was the Eroica California a few years ago on my 1961 Hetchins. Iowa's BRR Ride in February is my current favorite. RAGBRAI has gotten too big and commercial for my tastes.

Campy or Shimano?
I prefer Campagnolo on my classics. I had a Raleigh Prestige with Suntour Superbe Pro that was excellent and I put thousands of miles on that ride. I have also used older Shimano DuraAce on an Eddy Merckx and DeRosa.

Any big plans for the next year?
I plan on to keep riding the trails in Iowa to stay in shape and meet interesting people from all over the world. I also volunteer on several committees to promote trail building and tourism.

Seller of the Week: Jeff Dalik from BikeMD

March 20, 2023 12:24pm by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is Jeff Dalik from BikeMD in Baltimore, Maryland! Jeff has been selling with us since November--everything from a Parlee gravel bike to a Campy peanut butter wrench! See all his listings!

How did you get into bikes?

I feel my interest in bikes was innate. As soon as I experienced the freedom to go places at a young age, I just wanted to explore and be social. I also liked how easy it was to work on a bike in the 70s and the noticeable improvement from cleaning and greasing a chain and ball bearings in the hubs and bottom bracket. I was self taught and recall my father saying "You took it apart so I guess you know how to put it back together," although he would have been glad to help if I needed it. I got more serious about my interest after completing the 1989 Cycle Across Maryland bike tour, a 420 mile ride from Hagerstown to Snow Hill. It cost $90 for the whole week long of support. I met my riding partner who inspired us to race and later open a bike shop in 1996. I am still managing a bike shop twenty-seven years later and love to share my passion of bikes.

What bike do you ride the most?

Lately, the bike I ride the most is a Trek Conduit eBike as a commuter for my 24 mile roundtrip to work. But the bikes I enjoy riding the most are a Waterford R-33 with SRAM Red and a Ritchey 650-B with Shimano XTR. I prefer the feel of steel frames.

What is your favorite bike ride?

Any time I ride with my kids is my favorite. I no longer track average speed/heart rate/etc. and ride for the fun factor.

Campy or Shimano?

I rode Campy in the 90's and early 2000's when it was still mostly metal. I lost interest in Campy when all the carbon bits showed up and the complexity grew. SRAM became my preference on the road, but Shimano will always win on the MTB side for me.

Any big plans for the next year?

I coach a NICA team that my son races for and I see that as the major plan for this year, with a special trip to Shenandoah or Ashville. It is his last year, unless he chooses a college that has a team. We'll see...

Seller of the Week: Eric from One Oak Bicycles

March 6, 2023 8:42am by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is Eric from One Oak Bicycles in Paoli, Wisconsin. Eric recently listed several incredible bikes with us, including this iconic and absolutely mint 1993 Bridgestone RB-1!

How did you get into bikes?

Pretty early on byway of a cheap family hand-me-down that my dad and I tricked out (including a rad rrrRaw Power sound hand grip). Once the training wheels came off, that was my first true taste of independence. A couple BMX bikes followed but quickly transitioned to road bikes at the dawn of the Greg LeMond era, customizing each and every bike I've owned along the way to a nearly 28-year career (and counting) in the bike industry.

What bike do you ride the most?

A neo-retro vintage Mike Appel with Campy Record 11 and deep-section carbon sew-ups.

What is your favorite bike ride?

A 30-ish mile ride my brother-in-law and I do multiple times each year while on vacation in upper Door County, Wisconsin.

Campy or Shimano?

From the tattoo on my ankle to my visit to their Vicenza HQ last June, it's Campy or nothing for me.

Any big plans for the next year?

Hoping to host a unique high-end Velo Swap mid-to-late Summer for local/regional cycling aficionados, and a Spray. Bike paint party in early Autumn when temperatures are best for spraying outdoors.

Seller of the Week: Chase Smith from The Bicycle Station

February 6, 2023 4:20pm by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is Chase Smith from The Bicycle Station in Columbus, Indiana. She recently listed several bikes and parts with us, including this 2023 Trek Superfly and this 2019 Specialized Diverge!

How did you get into bikes?

My dad and brothers all rode and tried for years to get me into cycling but I was stubborn and stuck with running. I finally ended up joining Teter Cycling, a Little 500 team at IU which got me into road. From there I started venturing into gravel and mountain bike! I just enjoy it all this point.

What bike do you ride the most?

I probably end up on my gravel bike the most. Our area has an endless amount of gravel roads that are easy to hop on regardless of the season. Right now I’m riding a Trek Checkpoint.

What is your favorite bike ride?

I don’t even know how to pick a favorite ride! My husband is super into Wandrer Earth and is always making us new routes. So any ride adventuring to a new-to-us area is probably my favorite.

Campy or Shimano?

Probably SRAM! I don’t even think I’ve had anything but SRAM for the last few year.

Any big plans for the next year?

This year I’m focusing on just getting back into riding after having my baby. I’m going to do a few races, but I’m mostly playing it by ear. I’m putting on a 60 mile gravel race in May and maybe another in the fall, so I’m probably going to take a small step back from racing to work on those and learn how to juggle riding and having a baby!

Seller of the Week: Hobo Hub Works

January 31, 2023 9:16am by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week's seller of the week is Hobo Hub Works! He came out of the gate strong, already selling a Moots Vamoots and a Kogswell that seemed to get everyone's attention on The Path Less Pedaled. That Surly Pacer is a steal and I'm seriously tempted by this Kona Kaboom!

How did you get into bikes?

In high-school I dabbled in bikes when the “Fixie” stuff was popular. Got a job at a outdoors store and it morphed into a bike shop over the years, and so did my love for all things bikes. Went on to start a shop in Florida and after three years sold it and moved to St. Louis where 90s MTBs have taken over my life.

What bike do you ride the most?

My Trek 7000 that I built out with a stridsland fork and chainring, Paul brakes, dynamo and all sorts of fun bits.

What is your favorite bike ride?

Anything on dirt with good people.

Campy or Shimano?

Vintage Shimano!

Any big plans for the next year?

Nothing much, would love to take a trip and do the Nutmeg Nor’Easter

Seller of the Week: Crimson Stallion Cycle Supply

January 23, 2023 5:33pm by rob
This week's Seller of the Week is Crimson Stallion Cycle Supply! We met these guys down at CABDA two weeks ago and they started selling on BikeList last week! They are a company of four cyclists that have been selling online since 2011 and have a combined 100 years of experience in the bike biz (from wholesale to retail). All of them ride for fun and also commute by bike regularly. Answers are from Ron (the owner) pictured below! Be sure to check out their cool listings from these Dura Ace R9100 cranks to this Rasta Marin Muirwoods frame!

How did you get into bikes?

I got into bikes at a very young age. I have always loved to ride rather than drive. I have evolved from putting bikes together just to make it work, to being very particular to what components are “allowed” go into one of my builds. Even if I am not riding, I find myself nerding out on bikes I see around town. My current collection has grown to an unreasonable amount. “The right amount of bikes is always one more than you own!”

What bike do you ride the most?

I am a big proponent of the 90’s 26” bike scene at the moment! The bike I currently ride the most is my 90s Mt. Shasta Tempest MTB. These are a small bit of 90’s GT history - Mt Shasta existed as a sub brand of GT. This bike is currently set up on a 1x10 Shimano Deore drivetrain, 880mm wide custom riser bars, and Panaracer Smoke and Dart gumwall tires. It even came stock with a GT seatpost and GT stamped fork! The frame has an amazing brushed aluminum finish.

What is your favorite bike ride?

My favorite type of bike ride is one that has no plan. While it is definitely nice to have a predetermined route, I find myself enjoying a ride that includes new scenery, good weather, and lots of dirt! There are so many areas to explore here in Southern California - we are spoiled with such amazing weather and natural sights.

Campy or Shimano?

While Campy has its place in new and classic builds, it can be funky! Odd standards, compatibility, availability seem to be challenging. However, you cannot deny its class and quality. I am a big fan of Shimano, and always have been! It is very easy to work with, great quality across the board, and parts are easy to replace. Compatibility amongst different generations is always a plus!

Any big plans for the next year?

Plans for the next year are to ride more, get lost in adventure and spread positivity on all levels. I am inspiring waves and smiles on the paths and trails. Another good goal would be to clear out bikes and bike parts to free up some space!

Seller of the Week: John Guerin

January 8, 2023 2:03pm by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is John Guerin AKA juanguerin. John has been one of our top sellers to date, with an eclectic and amazing variety of items from some of the brands our community loves the most: Paul Component, Chris King and Thomson just to name a few.

How did you get into bikes?

I was given my first two wheeler at age three by my Father and I've never looked back. Evel Knievel and BMX'ing in my early school years, road riding in high school and early college, and really falling in love hard in the 1990's and the birth of mountain biking.

What bike do you ride the most?

It's seasonal with the mountain single-speed in the summer months and the fat bike in the winter months.

What is your favorite bike ride?

Regardless of surface, just getting lost in new places for hours at a time, seeing new landscapes, climbing new mountains and meeting new cycling friends.

Campy or Shimano?

Bleh! It's all good. I get excited about the bling of Pauls, White Ind and King.

Any big plans for the next year?

I've registered for a number of Brevets in northern Colorado for the spring. Riding over the Big Horn mountain range in northern Wyoming in late summer which is the only range I haven't ridden yet in Wyoming. Lot's of single-speed mountain biking in between all that.

Seller of the Week: Jeff Frane

December 26, 2022 10:36am by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is Jeff Frane, AKA BikeJerks. Jeff is a legend in the Minnesota bike scene and famously founded All-City Cycles. Today his main focus is divided between his BikeJerks brand and his newly launched Wilde Bikes. You can see Wilde Earth Ship #1 for sale on our site now! We love everything Jeff does and are stoked to see him on BikeList!

How did you get into bikes?

I started as a kid exploring the neighborhood and I never stopped. I started racing mountain bikes in Junior High and in High School I never got my drivers license because I was too afraid of the responsibility of maybe killing somebody. So I never stopped riding my bike as transportation. I graduated with a Liberal Arts degree and so was in fine prospect to be hired at a bike shop when I moved to Minneapolis after completing my secondary education and having livied in a 1992 Dodge Caravan for a year. In Minneapolis, all we do is ride bikes. Fact: all new citizens are issued a u-lock and chamois cream at the county line. It's in the constitution. Mind you it's industrial stuff, strictly the bare minimum quality.

What bike do you ride the most?

My daily driver is a BMX handlebar'd Surly 1x1 single speed or an eight speed Fat Chance Yo Eddy! with a front rack. I also ride a ton on my gravel bikes, mtb's and various vintage bikes. Because I am a person who easily falls in love with "things," I have many bikes so none of those gets significantly more attention in terms of hours of use than the rest. The honest answer to this question would be my fat bike, a Salsa Beargrease. For four months of the year it is the only bike I use for sport or pleasure.

Campy or Shimano?

This old chestnut again? Is it 1997? That's a lazy question whom only folks on the cusp of aging out of their Paramounts likely give a fig regarding. Everybody knows the Nuovo and Super Record groups were innovative and iconic. That Shimano crushed the 80's mtb game as off-road technology emerged. That Suntour was always innovating, had that WTB collaboration period and that their Bar Cons are some of greatest parts ever made for function and durability. And that Grip Shift sucked, but that SRAM AXS is the biggest innovation of the last ten years.

But I will say that Campagnolo C-Record is the most beautiful groupset in the history of ever by a margin. So yeah. Campy.

Any big plans for the next year?

My dance card is full. In addition to all of the Wilde commitments, I'm looking at expanding the events I run with two more big ride/tour extravaganzas in addition to the Hodag Country Ramble. If y'all want to experience some deep Midwest stuff, show the heck up. We party.

Seller of the Week: The MTB Recyclist

December 5, 2022 2:24pm by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is The MTB Recyclist, an early adopter of BikeList who has pretty much cornered the market on 90s Trek mtb frames. Like this Trek 930 frame he sold on BikeList a few months back. Currently he is selling this super rad 1989 Diamond Back Axis Team.

How did you get into bikes?

Started riding in the '90s, road at first, then off-road. Had our first child a few years later then another and life got in the way, didn't have time to ride. Fast forward basically 30 years to 2020, I saw a rental trail bike in the lobby of a hotel I was staying at in Arizona. I didn't rent it, but thought "I should get back into mountain biking." Picked up a Diamond Back Response Elite on Craigslist for no money. Loved it. Started flipping bikes later that year when I saw how many were available and how much fun it was to rehab and rehome / resell the bikes and parts.

What bike do you ride the most?

That would have to be my '96 Trek Y11, which I bought to flip, but kept because it was my size and such an iconic 90s ride. Rebuilt it with full XT M739, ceramic Mavic Crossmax MK1s, a few other goodies. At 22 pounds, it's one of my lightest bikes, and is even lighter than my single speed Univega Alpina.

What is your favorite bike ride?

We are fortunate to have an awesome trail system just minutes from my house, a county nature preserve. It's many miles of sweet, flowing singletrack and so much fun. I rarely ride anywhere else, especially with gas prices so high.

Campy or Shimano?

Shimano

Any big plans for the next year?

Not really, other than getting into gravel / adventure cycling, maybe bikepacking. Also want to try and ride MORE and work on my bikes LESS. Wish me luck with THAT! haha!
