Hi, I'm the MTB Recyclist (@the_mtb_recyclist on Instagram) and I specialize in vintage '90s mountain bikes, particularly steel. This gorgeous 1989 Diamond Back Axis Team is not just a survivor, it's a veritable 80s time capsule. It's full Deore XT and all original except for the seat (and possibly the tires), in incredible condition, fully complete, and with just some freshening, will be ready to rock for another 30+ years!

This is a 19.5" model, MADE IN JAPAN using double butted Tange Prestige chromoly steel tubing. It's a classic 26er from the days when Diamond Back was arguably at its peak. It definitely has been enjoyed, but, it's also been well cared for and stored properly for the last 30-something years. There are scratches, marks and nicks (mostly on the chainstay, from chain impacts), but nothing major. The paint still retains its much of its original shine. Decals are nearly perfect, other than slight damage in a few spots. The headset is 1". Rear spacing is 135mm. The drivetrain is full XT M730, 7 speed, with perfectly working thumb shifters. The bar ends were apparently added when the bike was new. Cables and housings need to be replaced, as do the tires. Tubes hold air. Saddle is not original to the bike, and not period correct, but is in fact Diamond Back branded, so there's that. :-) I'm told that straight fork was a one-year release, which makes this bike even more rare and desirable.

Take a moment and consider the paintwork. I'm told the 'smoke' effect was literally created by hand, using actual smoke, but I can't verify it. Regardless, it's truly unique and uber cool. Also of note is the straight cro-moly fork, which really sets off the look of the bike. Rims are Araya RM-17 in silver, drilled for Presta valves; they are true within ~1mm and do not have any significant marks or damage. Hubs are XT M730.

I think that about does it. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further information, measurements, or photos!

Question Will the bike come fully cleaned and tuned? The rear cassette and chain still look like they've been sitting for 30 years.

GREAT IDEA! Here's what I'm thinking...stay with me here!

I would *LOVE* to painstakingly clean this bike (I debated doing so before listing it actually) and install new cables, get everything dialed in, and WILL ABSOLUTELY DO THAT for the new owner. For FREE. I'll even replace the chain if it needs it, but last I checked, it was not sufficiently worn.

HOWEVER ... I would not consider the bike READY TO RIDE in that without new brake pads and new tires. Those are PERSONAL decisions / preferences that I would not want to make for the new owner.

BUT ... I will be happy to INSTALL, for FREE, any of those parts the new owner tells me they want, and will work with them to acquire them shipped to my location for the cheapest price possible (no markup).

Finally, since the bike will come partially disassembled when shipped, I would recommend / ask / require that the bike be fully INSPECTED by a qualified bike mechanic BEFORE being ridden. Safety first.

What do you think, KITM?

Thanks for asking!

Kevin
