Oh, Cannondale. Why do you make my life so difficult? I've had the hardest time identifying this frame. To quote Tom Petty, "I'm confident, but not really sure." (Song: "Saving Grace.")
Is it a 1996? I think so. A reference in the 1996 catalog confirms the M500's frame design as Killer V. It says: "Size 14 comes with Killer V style frame configuration and 2" downtube." So there's that.
Why does this matter? Because it does. I'm weird like that. Moving on...
This frame is one of the nicest I've acquired to re-home. The finish is amazing and the paint is gorgeous. The welds ... wow. Cannondale knows how to weld aluminum, that's for sure. Condition-wise, there are very few signs it was ridden much. Absolutely NO dents, dings or gouges ANYWHERE. There are a couple VERY MINOR spots of corrosion (good luck finding them in the photos, they are that minimal.) NO chainsuck damage. NO storage damage that I can see. Bike has never had a kickstand installed.
Size-wise, I have these measurements for you:
14.5" from the center of the axle to the top of the "top tube" (14" to the CENTER of the top tube)
16" from the center of the axle to the top of the seat tube
20" top tube, center of seat post to center of head tube
So, will this bike fit you? I hate this question. It's the smallest frame they sold this year. So, for a young adult, I dunno, 5' or so? Smaller? A bit taller? AAAAAAAHHHH! If you think it's too small, it probably is. If you're already riding a teeny-tiny bike, it's probably perfect!
It's CAAD3 aluminum, made in the USA of course. It takes a 27.2mm seat post. The included bottom bracket spins very nicely. Everything is straight and solid. Make this your project, today! :)
