My Five Favorite Bike Tools

February 8, 2023 2:48pm by rob
High quality tools can last a lifetime. I’ve had several of these tools for decades. They may be getting somewhat out of date, but so are most of my bikes!

Var dishing tool

I doubt this beautiful blue French dishing tool is still made. Back when I bought it, it was considered better than the Campy because it worked for road wheels AND 26 inch mtb wheels!

Felco cable cutters

Still the best ones on the market as far as I’m concerned. Change my mind.

Hozan 4th hand tool

These used to be the standard in shops. We used to call them “green grabbers.” I don’t think they are green anymore and the Park equivalent may be more popular, but these are great. Probably not used as much on bikes since most people are riding disc brakes these days.

Campagnolo derailleur alignment tool

This tool is beautifully simple. Newer versions from Park and Abbey are more high tech and have gauges, but the old Campy one has always done the job just fine for me.

Park Deluxe repair stand

Not sure if a stand qualifies as a tool but I love this thing. Had it for over 30 years. When I ordered it I was still working in shops and my manager was worried I was getting ready to quit! Awesome clamp design and a 65 pound base plate! Park has made some minor changes over the years, but the basic design has remained the same.
