Seller of the Week: Kurt Boone

November 17, 2022 9:26am by rob
Welcome back to another edition of Seller of the Week: the blog series where we ask our favorite sellers five easy questions!

This week’s seller of the week is Kurt Boone (AKA 85messlife). I first met Kurt at the Philly Bike Expo–he was my neighbor! We got to know each other over the weekend and I learned about his love for the New York bike messenger scene. Kurt has listed several of his books for sale on BikeList, along with the Giordana cycling caps he designed. But my favorite item is the custom Ortlieb messenger bag collaboration he did with illustrator Roloworld @roloworldnyc. Ortlieb bags were my go-to as a commuter in Seattle and this one is one-of-a-kind!

How did you get into bikes?

I started riding bicycles when I was 5 years old when my father put me on training wheels. I felt in love with bicycles from that point on. Riding bicycles almost every day all through high school. Having all kind of bikes from 5 speed to 10 speeds. I was a paperboy on bicycle too for a short time. I was also a fan of tour deFrance. Watching the race on American TV Wide World of Sports in 1970’s. After graduating from high school in Queens New York I stop riding bicycles. I didn’t get back into cycling until in my late forties and I started hanging out with co-workers who were bicycle messengers. My job in the courier industry was as a foot messenger. But instead of hopping back on a bicycle I became a documentarian of urban cycling culture. Writing books, working for Urban Velo magazine and designing t-shirts and cycling caps. I trademark my brand Messenger 841. In which I still sell merchandise. My next book will be drawn on my collection of urban cycling memorabilia. Tentatively titled “Urban Bike Culture” by Kurt Boone. You are hearing it first on Bike List.

What bike do you ride the most?

I don’t ride much these days and don’t even own a bicycle at the moment

What is your favorite bike ride?

As in question two I am not riding bicycles at the moment. But I do have sales rep job with Ortlieb selling messenger bags to bicycle messenger themselves and to messenger companies

Campy or Shimano?

I can’t answer that one. I am not a bicycle parts guy. But Shimano NYC did sponsor one of my bicycle messenger events in the past.

Any big plans for the next year?

I am currently working on cycling cap design collaboration with Ortlieb that will be released so time next year.
